I have been watching Korean drama lately. I just finished watching 별에서 온 그대 (byeoleseo on kudae). Although the English translated title of this drama is very popular, i still love breaking down the words of the title. 별 (byeol) means star with the place marker 에서 and 온 (on) is from the verb 오다 (oda) which means to come but since it’s in modifier form 온 actually denotes past event, this two words means came from star. 그대 means you which is typically used on songs and poems. I am not sure if this is still being used in normal Korean conversation though. So 별에서 온 그대 would mean You (who) came from stars :-)
Anyway, after watching this 21-episode drama in marathon, i came to realise that there is this word I often hear at the end of the conversation. This word I am referring to is 그럼 (geureom). I actually had double thoughts if I heard the word right. From what I know 그럼 means ‘so’ or ‘by the way’ as such I don’t expect it to be said right at the end of a statement. It was weird that in most cases where I hear this word from the drama, the scene is the person who just said 그럼 would leave the person he/she is talking to.
To end my curiosity, I asked two of my Korean friends if I am hearing this word right. This is what I learned from my them, other than the meaning I know this word is apparently used frequently at the end of Korean conversation. It means to end discussion and would suggest that the speaker is about to leave or bid goodbye.
Such a little thing but to someone who is eager to learn Korean, this is worthy to know especially that I someday still dream of being conversant in this language.
이거 지금 친구에서 알았어요…그럼 ^^

Korean Comics! Fun way to practice hangul
Oppa: My younger sister is drinking soju!!
Spadoid: Bottoms up!
CULTURAL NOTE: In Korea, the national alcohol is Soju (소주)! Soju is a rice-based alcohol with a taste similar to vodka. The alcohol content varies from 15% to 20%, and one bottle is typically cheaper than a bottle of beer! People typically say "one shot" (원샷) when drinking, meaning "bottoms up" or "chug"!

Oh La La...소.녀.시.대 : )
HAHAHA.. well what can I say about the title there?
난 정말 소녀시대 팬이에요!!
난 = I
정말 = really
소녀시대 팬이에요 = am SNSD fan.
I have been really busy with work for the past few months and still am really busy but since currently I am on holiday (Eid day Holidays.. yippie for me) so I have a few days free from work.. So I decide to write something. I really feel bad for visitors & followers who has been checking & visiting this blog. Sorry for not updating for quite a loooooooooooooong while..I really have been busy with work and because of work also my hangul studying has been huhu not going smoothly as before. I have no time to study. the only time I have is when I get back home from work and that is when all you want to do is take a shower & go to bed : ). So to keep up with hangul studying, I have been listening to korean songs. Well, I have been listening to korean songs for like forever but yeah, now Im really listening to the lyric since I do have a better vocab since I started studying hangul.
Am I the only SNSD fan here? hope not : ). I love their songs. I know some of their music, songs & lyric sound a bit childish (esp. from the Oh album to all the previous ones) but I cant help it. I love happy cheerful songs like that.
Have you guys heard of 'Oh La La'? The song is from their album 'baby Baby'... Its a very cheerful song about a girl's dream to meet her fairy tale prince. The lyric consist of words that are not hard to understand, if you have learn and study hangul for quite awhile im sure you can catch a few of the words if not most.
Let us listen to the song first (well if you havent listen to it before & not yet a soshi fan then you should try n listen : ))
now try sing along with the lyric.. and pls dont read the romanizations lyric. we need to be able to read hangul fluently now..
옛날 옛적 언니들과 계모에게 몹시 구박 받던
그녀 이름 마음도 몸도 착한 신데렐라
어느 날 밤에 무도회 이쪽저쪽 다니다가
왕자님 만나 첫눈에 반해서 사랑에 빠져 버렸죠
주위를 둘러봐 멋진 왕자님
나는 공주님 모두들 우리를 축하해요
Chorus
Ooh La-La 나는 아직은 어리지만 그대의 존재를 믿어요 단 한명의 나만의 왕자님을 Ooh La-La 그대만의 공주 될래요 그대에게 잘 어울릴 난 공주가 될래, 그래 Ooh La-La
Ooh la-la, ooh what a feeling
기억하니 항상 one two, three two,
four two 줄을 맞춰
Ooh La-La
Ooh La-La
Ooh La-La 나는 아직은 어리지만
그대의 존재를 믿어요
단 한명의 나만의 왕자님을
Ooh La-La 그대 역시 나를 찾겠죠
우리 만날 그날 올 때까지 나 여기에 있어,
봤어 Ooh La-La
when you listen to the song or read the lyric Im sure you will be able to catch a few words there. This is one of the many ways I do to train my vocab and also have a better understanding on the sentence structure. I always try to understand the sentence my self first, try and translate how i think it meant and then I compare them to the translated lyric. Then I will be able to see whether what I understand is correct or not and then I learn how it should be. Do you know what I mean..? or are you confuse with what I typed just now? lol
Oh well, let me try translate the chorus part. (see thats why I bold on the chorus part hehe).

Once a upon time, there lived a girl who was abused by her stepsisters and stepmother.
She had a nice heart and her name was Cinderella
One day she was walking around at the ball
She met the prince and fell in love at first sight.
Look around, there's the handsome prince
And I'm the princess and Everyone is congratulating us
*Ooh La-La although I am still young
I believe in your existence, my one and only prince.
Ooh La-La I want to become your princess
I want to become a princess that is right for you
Yes Ooh La-La
Ooh la-la, ooh what a feeling
Do you remember always one two, three two, four two matching the line
The nice dwarfs and happy Snow White walking along
Then she eats a poisoned apple and is near death
A prince on a white horse gives her a sweet kiss and wakes up the sleeping princess
Look around, there's the handsome prince
And I am the princess, and everyone is congratulating us
*Ooh La-La although I am still young
I believe in your existence, my one and only prince
Ooh La-La I want to become your princess
I want to become a princess that is right for you
Yes Ooh La-La
Then the princess went to the prince's castle
In a carriage and lived happily ever after.
I don't have a prince on a white horse in my life yet
but I'm sure he is somewhere
While I wait until the day I meet you
I won't lose my dream
*Ooh La-La although I am still young
I believe in your existence, my one and only prince
Ooh La-La I want to become your princess
I want to become a princess that is right for you
Yes Ooh La-La
Ooh La-La although I am still young
I believe in your existence, my one and only prince
Ooh La-La You will find me too
I will be here until the day we meet
I saw Ooh La-La

I didnt translate the whole song here but you get the idea, the important thing is when you listen to the song you do get to catch the words in the song and probably also able to understand the whole sentence aswell. Its okay if what you did understand isnt exactly correct when you check back the real translation. From this, you will be able to understand and know how the korean language structure is and also improve your understanding. Plus you get to improve your vocab. and also enjoy the song : ))
